Even when escaping to the mountains, shopaholics do not need to go cold turkey. With its abundance of natural resources, Khao Yai offers a wide spectrum of products from fresh milk and homemade ice cream to tenderloin steaks, from avocados right off the tree to grapes right off the vine as well as fine vintage wines. Then there’s locally grown and hand-woven silk and cotton as well as terracotta and ceramic pottery and sculptures.

Palio Khao Yai

This little Italian village transplanted in Thailand
takes its name from the famed horse
race in the Tuscan town of Siena. Palio
means “prize” and this new tourist attraction
has been awarded to Khao Yai. Red-tiled
roofs, balconies with balustrades, piazzas
with fountains – Palio makes a play at Tuscany.
Shops painted bright colors open their
shuttered windows on the cobblestoned
alleys and visitors peek in on gourmet foods,
art galleries, and clothing boutiques. Sip an
espresso, visit a nail spa or find something
to read before lunch or dinner. Like any small
town, everything you need can be found here
– including banks, travel agencies, pharmacies
and other services as well as home accessories,
fine wine and fresh baked goods.
Buy a gelato and take a stroll through this
little slice of Italy.

the Northeast of Thailand has The Mall.
Part of a national chain of 10 department
stores, The Mall Korat is the largest in
the region containing over 200,000 m² of

basement level, formerly known as “Day

while camping equipment, music, home

the second. Three sections -- Power
Mall, IT and Service – share the third floor.
The water park has a fresh coat of paint
and offers a break for the kids and exhausted

Dan Kwian Pottery

For anyone who loves earthenware and terra cotta style decorative objects, Dan Kwian Pottery Village can be a fun shopping excursion. There is a collection of streetside vendors lined up in front of the main marked entranceway of the official ‘pottery village’, although it may be a good idea to wait until going inside, where the prices are slightly cheaper for the exact same goods. Most of the items are kitschy, cutesy things that have much personality, like one bright colored lawn ornament of a plump girl in a bikini, or the larger-than-life sized stools shaped like a woman’s derriere in blue jeans! However, if a classic or basic design is desired in a vase, large planter, hanging birdhouse or outdoor fountain, then those are easy to find as well.
