Sala Khaoyai

Top of the top of the numerous resorts east of Khao Yai, on the road leading to Wang Nam Khiao, is without doubt the Sala Khaoyai Resort. This modern, exclusive property, perched on top of a hill overlooking the lush Khao Yai countryside, opened in November 2009. It consists of only 7 guestrooms, which are uniquely stylish and include 3 Deluxe Rooms, 2 Pool Villas and 2 Pool Villa Suites. They occupy 35 to 164 square meters. The Pool Villas have their private pool. Besides, there is an oval, infinity- edged hilltop swimming pool with a large sundeck from where sunsets can be viewed sipping cocktails. Each room has its own rooftop sundeck with easy chairs and far-reaching views. The hilltop restaurant enjoys a 360°-view and uses vegetables grown on the property’s own organic garden. It serves a variety of international haute cuisine and selected traditional Thai dishes, and has
an outdoor wood-burning fireplace and an air-conditioned hilltop bar. In-room as well as Sala Spa treatments are at hand. Khao Yai National Park, golf, winery and hiking tours can be organized, and mountain bikes can be hired. Perhaps the most unique feature of this resort is the ‘underground’ atmosphere felt in the villa bedrooms, as the bungalows are constructed directly into the mountainside, which provides an effect of greater privacy and guarantees personalized yet panoramic views.

Villa Paradis

It’s a bit searching to find this rather
isolated resort, but once discovered
you fall for the charm of this location,
in the midst of a green mountainscape.
Especially from the terraced
restaurant where breakfast or dinner
can be savoured, the extended view
over the forested hills is appealing.
Harmoniously blended with the
beautiful Khao Yai nature, Villa Paradis
is another boutique hotel of the
area in contemporary architectural
design. Rooms are spacious and
decorated with gusto, and Deluxe rooms have bedroom- and
living spaces on two levels, separated by a see-through wall of wooden elements. The garden is lush and made up by a collection of tropical trees and plants, hiding a swimming pool surrounded by greenery. Moreover, there is a fully equipped conference room. The spot is very relaxing and the service is based on hospitality and regards.

Palio Inn

The newly-open tourist spot in the Italianized town like Khao Yai is Palio. It is named after the historical horse racing held in the center of Siena, a town in Tuscany region, Italy, and “prize” is its meaning. The developers intended to give this as a prize to Khao Yai as another magnificent tourist spot. Walking in Palio is like walking in an Italian town that gives a one-stop shopping and service center to locals and tourists. Restaurants, gourmet food shops, clothing boutiques, banks, travel agency, bookstores, coffee shops, pharmacies, nail spa, art galleries and specialty stores lie along the alleys of cobblestoned pathway. Add to them is the Palio Inn, a boutique hotel with an ancient Europe decoration of 17 units in three room types: Deluxe, Superior, and Standard. Each type is decorated differently with different style of furniture, but they all give the back to the ancient Europe atmosphere. For rooms with a balcony offer a chance to have a view of the whole Italianized town to see how lively it is and so are the people.

DNA Resort & Spa Khao Yai

It is believed that circular shape takes up
a lot of space but has limited use. This
belief cannot be applied to DNA resort,
the outlook of the next-20-year accommodation.

Having designed countless houses and
seen numerous architectural designs
across the world inspired Professor Dr.
Soontorn Boonyatikarn and Dr. Vorasun
Buranakarn to create the masterpiece
of accommodation. With this concept in
mind, the resort is created by employing
the scientific feng shui—water at the front
and mountains at the back—to keep the
temperature stable and consistent with
human body temperature (26°C) and
create a healthy atmosphere for human
to live in. The globe at the entrance of
the resort is the center of Applied Thai
medical treatment. Using geometric
and free-form concept, together with
architecture therapy concept, this place
is ideal for rehabilitating body and mind
and saving the world at the same time.
Simply put, DNA is definitely natural accommodation.

The Bonanza Khao Yai Hotel

The TV show Bonanza was a favorite back
in the 1960s. 17 years ago, Khun Phaivong
Dechanarong decided he wanted to recreate
this American western lifestyle in the mountains
of Khao Yai, and so began the building of this
new resort empire. Stretching over 4,000 rai
(1,600 acres), The Bonanza Khao Yai caters to
every member of the family as it includes the Bonanza
Adventure Park as well as Bonanza Golf &
Country Club with an 18-hole course designed
by Bob McFarland. Guests have a choice of
six accommodation including the Santa Fe and
Baan Inca accommodation. While much of the
construction is rustic log, the amenities are all
very modern. If the massive swimming pool, a
round of golf, horseback riding, repelling canopy
archery, rock climbing, ATV and other activities
aren’t enough, you also have the rainforests
and valleys of the Asean Heritage Khao
Yai National Park to explore.

Veravian Resort

One of the super-modern design resorts to be
found on this road is Veravian Resort. Time
Coffee shop along the road functions as an
energy stop on the long drive or as a gate to
the uphill road leading to the resort proper. A
vast, breezy and beautifully designed reception
lobby welcomes the guest. From here, as
from every room or resort outlet, the views over
rolling hills and mountains are grand. The word
Veravian has a Thai (time–moving around) and
English (veranda–aviation) meaning. This is the
place to move around leisurely and let the time
pass by, the veranda to sit and rest and leave
worries behind. The very up-to-date concept
uses renewable energy such as wind power
for lighting systems and solar cells for heating
water, a remarkable effort in this time of ecological
question marks. Moreover, the single houses
designed beneath the main building are partially
built underground, with a roof covered by grass.
Thus the heat from sunlight is greatly absorbed
and the rooms stay naturally cool, which results
in air-con energy saving and responds to
the problem of global warming. Twin and
single houses are available, all with ample
design rooms, broad views of the surrounding
scenery, and multi-level bathrooms with
outdoor and indoor showers. The restaurant
has an all-embracing view and serves Thai
and European food, the signature dish being
deep-fried snapper with fresh chilli and lime
‘in Veravian style’. There is a camping zone
with space for 50 tents (even their shower
facilities use solar energy), a football and
pétanque field, an infinity-edged swimming
pool, and wi-fi is also available. The resort
is close to Khao Phang Mah where tourists
come to see the rare gaur bull (krathing).

Dern Din Du Dao Resort

This sprawling property is perched
on terraced hills in Wang Nam
Khiao district, showing off panoramic
vistas of the surrounding
valley. The name of this resort
suggests going for walks and star
gazing, so the best time of year to
stay here is after the rainy season
when the landscape is green and
lush, or in the winter when it’s cool
and crisp. The style of this resort
is boutique rustic--comfortably
equipped bungalows complete
with large wood decks, outdoor
reclining chairs, and some units
even have barbecue grills. For
groups or big families, there is
the option of a dorm-style hut
that sleeps up to 10 people. Most
of the other rooms are doubles,
with an additional four-post wood
frame bed for a third person
or simply to be used as a day
lounger. The walls of the huts are
mostly glass windows that push
open, so the entire room can feel
fresh and breezy.

Nrasangphangmah

They call themselves a boutique resort
and with just eight stylish and comfortable
mountain villas, Nrasangphangmah is certainly
that. Set in the foothills of Phang Mah
Mountain protected forest and animal sanctuary
and with an ozone level of 7, the resort
offers the purest environment and tranquil
ambience. From the viewing tower, you can
see just how secluded you really are as well
as protected by the surrounding majestic
peaks. Many guests try to wake up early to
watch a dazzling sunrise before sitting down
to a free feast of a breakfast. The mountain
can make you hungry. After this, some
choose to laze away the day at their private
home, while others choose to go whitewater
rafting and or mountain trekking nearby
where a large herd of krating, wild mountain
buffalos, makes their home. For other meals,
the restaurant kitchen is made available to
guests. There’s also the Imsuk (Contentedly

both Thai and Continental cuisine.

Dharaburee Butique Hotel

Originally, the owners intended to have
this 12-room boutique hotel be a honeymoon
getaway, but as the clientele turned
out to be a mixed crowd, it evolved into
an alternative type of accommodation
from the big hotel chains. Each of the
rooms are decorated in totally contrasting
looks; one of them has a gothic inspired
theme with deep purples, black leather
and a dramatic chandelier; another room
is resplendent in its glittering golds and
reds of an upscale Shanghai inn; there
is a country suite with log cabin furnishings
of faux fireplace, animal skin rug and
quilted bedspread; yet another room
is the polar opposite with its tastefully
erotic art on the walls and futuristic space
capsule vibe. The hotel property displays
an eclectic collection of random objects
that the owners have accumulated over the
years--antique typewriters, gramophones,
travel sized perfumes, tea kettles and there
is even a turn of the century barber’s chair in
the front entranceway.

Impoo Hill Resort

If you managed, in the surprisingly high number
of resorts clustered in the Wang Nam
Khiao area, to see a pink-coloured, waving
wall on your right-hand side, you found the
Impoo Hill. Turning around the walled corner,
you continue one more kilometre and enter
the enormous, squared compound of the
resort grounds. The complex is so big that’s
it’s already an adventure to find the reception
and lobby building. Around endless spaces
of gardens, walkways, lakes and lawns are
scattered rooms, bungalows and villas in the
most eclectic architectural styles.
Standard attractive rooms are located in
a brand new, 2-story building (the ‘Club
House’). Suite rooms are actually something
like a two-bedroom apartment, but then
twice as large as an urban condominium
unit. On either side of a central living room
with TV saloon, kitchenette (no cooking,
only rinsing), bar and refrigerator is a very
spacious bedroom. The bathroom is almost
a ballroom, with a grey-cemented, glazed
flower-encrusted tub and a shower which
doesn’t need a curtain as only half of its size
is splashed while showering. Besides, there
are cute, round bungalows with thatched
roofs, funny windows and close-to-nature,
‘Flintstone’-style bathrooms. ‘Ban Rak
Din’, or Love Soil House, looks like a giant
concrete mushroom. The villas are either in
modern style (‘Baan Modern’) or in Lanna architecture,
and can sleep 4 to 8 persons. The
swimming pool features green, chlorine-less
water. Bicycles, go-carts and ATV’s are for
rent, as are kayaks to circle the canal around
the compound.

Casa Pendio

Tucked away at the end of a secondary
gravel road is a still very small-scale design
resort waiting to be discovered. The name
already is intriguing – Casa Pendio. This Italian
equivalent of ‘Hillside House’ happens
to be a very modern-style and charming
countryside resort, all in grey and white,
with one sizeable building serving as restaurant
and four slightly elevated cubic rooms
spread out in a lovely garden. The location
is rather ideal. The area is cool (even in the
hot season), short-stemmed rhododendrons
colour the restaurant-side garden with light
blue and purple bulbs, and mountain views
are all around, including a carpet of morning
fog in the rainy season. The restaurant is a
simple 4-table affair, serving a limited choice
of excellent food. The rooms are an example
of contemporary design of distinguished
taste. Beds, chairs, desks, bathroom and
dressing are models of studied simplicity
and outstanding quality. Grey is definitely
the dominant hue. A complementary asset
are the room’s ample timber terraces
from where the green hillside lawns can
be observed, as well as a pond, the surrounding
cassava and corn fields and the
misty hills of Tub Lan-Khao Yai.

SabaiGuy Villas

This very nice and stylish nature resort,
located just behind the Tub Lan nature
reserve, is surrounded on 3 sides by
forests, and creates a cozy atmosphere
in the middle of green nature. The reception
is an attractive thatch-roofed hut.
The resort has only 6 units, which are
of 3 different types. The Mountain villas
look like Swiss chalets and have large
balconies. The Hideaway villas are constructed
on the hillside and guests can
enjoy good views. The All Season villas
are all-timber units with ample terraces.
Construction is strictly restricted to clay,
stone and wood materials. Apart from a
restaurant, a bar and a beer garden, the
resort has a massage- and spa lounge
and a snooker room. Eco-activities
such as plant growing, animal feeding
and organic food farming are
explained on useful educational tours
for young and old. Outdoor activities,
jungle walks, bird watching and gardening
tours are organized.

Village Farm Resort & Winery

About 10 years ago, vineyards were planted
on a hillside overlooking a valley which, in the
cool and rainy seasons, fills up with thick fog
in the early hours. That’s why the quality wine
produced in this winery is called ‘Château
des Brumes’, Castle in the Mist.
At the edge of an elevated green carpet of
vineyards, on a slope looking out through a
clear forest towards the distant road, sits an
all-timber, romantic and classy farm estate
with appealing accommodation facilities.
The oldest rooms, located in ‘The Old Barn’,
are being renovated. In a separate building, a
short stroll further, is ‘Sunset Terrace House’,
with 15 elegant wooden rooms each with a
large terrace, easy chairs and of course a
sunset view. The ‘Swiss Châlet House’ has
another 6 charming rooms tastily decorated
and terraced. Though the bathrooms are tiny,
the rooms are pleasant and the location is
very relaxing. There is a swimming pool ‘with
a view’, a community room and a bar with old
wooden barrels serving as tables, and there
are wine tasting sessions on Saturday.
An alfresco restaurant serves, besides the
Thai classics, wine-related international food.
Special dishes include starters like deep-fried
camembert cheese with grape sauce, and
main dishes such local delicacies as venison
steak, salmon steak with white wine and capers,
and spaghetti with shiitake mushrooms
and white wine cream sauce.

Ban Rai Sujira

Set in the rolling hills of Pak Chong, Ban
Rai Sujira offers an ideal opportunity to get
close to the surrounding nature. Three rustic
luxury homes with one or two bedrooms and
wide verandas offer panoramic views of the
verdant plains and mountain backdrop. A full
facility campsite with tents to rent for those
without one affords cozy accommodation
that can be made even warmer by a campfire
under the stars. In the mornings, if anyone
is too lazy to cook, the resort’s restaurant
is ready to provide a hearty breakfast. Delicious
lunches and dinners are also served,
prepared with freshly picked produce and
ingredients. For excitement, many choose
to rent off-road ATVs to whisk over the hills
and through the forest trails. Others may
choose a quieter, but slightly more strenuous
mountain bike tour. Khao Yai National Park
main dishes such local delicacies as venison
steak, salmon steak with white wine and capers,
and spaghetti with shiitake mushrooms
and white wine cream sauce.

‘boutique accommodation trend’, meaning
modern amenities supplement the camping
style. There is a choice of packages including
meals, farm- and agro-tours and accommodation
in luxurious tents. The concept is that
of learning about farming and understanding
nature while staying in the midst of it, and to
unwind from urban life. As vehicles, smoking

Probably the last place
you might expect to
find a rice barge is in
the mountains. Some
of the villas in this resort
have taken their
inspiration from the
traditional boats and
float up in the air on
poles. Views are from
the slopes of a mountain
valley on a property
totalling 42 rai.
The barges “sail” over
a mango orchard and are connected by
a wood and concrete pathway. Bathrooms
come with sunroofs and some

Baan Rabiang Dao Garden & Resort

with Jacuzzis. Guests enjoy a number
of activities including swimming in one
of two contour pools, zip-lining down
the slopes, and horseback riding and
mountain biking. Dining is on site with the
resort’s own Thai restaurant and meals
can be served near the pool as well. The
design is an unusual concept and being
lifted above the greenery offers a different
perspective on the natural beauty.
