Now seen as one of the
chicest neighborhoods in
downtown Bangkok, this
street is extensive enough to
be considered its own part
of town. Within this trendy
enclave lies a variety of stylish
restaurants, bars, clubs,
designer goods, fashionable
dwellings and many other
amenities. There are lots
of places that allow one to
sample different types of
settings in terms of nightlife.
Many of the venues here
are a bit more upscale, so
although there is no formal
dress code, looking sharp
would be appreciated. This
area is mostly frequented by
well-heeled Thais and young
professionals. As a courtesy
service, there is also a free
shuttle that drives along the
main road from Sukhumvit
into Thong Lor (Soi 55) to
take people to designated
bus stops near nightlife destinations.
Look for the small
red bus and the stops are
also red with visible Johnnie
Walker ads and labeled,
“Red Limo Station”. |

JET has a rather posh-looking exterior, with bouncers and velvet
rope to usher in the club goers. Here the music is, you guessed
it, heavily into hip-hop and also includes reggaeton and popular
danceable sounds. The interior is simply an open room with highceilings
and elaborate designs on the walls, reminiscent of a retro
opera house. The one facet that sets this club apart from others of
this size is that they have shisha available in addition to the fully
stocked bar.

TO DIE FOR is more hip fusion restaurant than bar, but has a
beautiful garden patio nestled in a private square where diners can
sip fine wines and cocktails on lounge-y daybeds while listening to
chill-out tunes. The stunning bar inside is definitely a centerpiece
for this place, with sleek lines, smooth surfaces and sexy lighting.
This is fabulous choice for an intimate dinner followed by drinks and
conversation on a luxurious oversized sofa.

BOOZE is a predominantly hip-hop club, divided into an
outdoor terrace for eating and drinking, having conversation
and enjoying the open air where it’s less smoky and
loud. The indoors are made up of a spacious main room,
filled with tables and chairs where people create drink stations
to stash their bottles and sit or dance around. Flashing
projection screens and glittering lights illuminate the
crowd, as the DJ delivers the hits. In an adjacent smaller
room, there is a stage for an opening band that performs
earlier in the night, before the club gets full and the music
selection switches over to the blinging beats. Other sectioned
off areas include a more chill space with low tables
and high cushions away from the traffic of the main room,
as well as a pool table with nearby access to its own bar.

Only a few sois over from
Thong Lor, Ekamai has
emerged as a new nightlife
zone with some popular venues
to add to the mix. |

SANTIKA is another one of the giant supperclubs.
Attracting a primarily affluent Thai
student crowd, along with an occasional
influx of Westerners and Euro models, find
a niche near the warmly lit main stage,
complete with DJs and bands serenading a
young, trendy crowd with mainstay hip-hop,
Thai pop, international dance beats and lite
rock, or hang out in the more intimate second
room, devoted mainly to hip-hop for a
more informal and rambunctious bunch.

ESCOBAR provides an additional alternative
among the hip-hop heavy venues. The outdoor
terrace affords an open-air section for watching
the late-night traffic of Ekamai Road, while
in terms of indoor seating, there is a small bar
on the right for chilling out as the main bar past
the entrance gets pretty crowded during the
weekends.

An assorted collection of mega-clubs and
smaller bars, this area located on Royal City
Avenue is designated by the government as
a nightlife entertainment zone and is therefore
granted the later 2 AM ‘official’ closing
time. No longer seen as the party spot for
only the younger crowd, the big clubs have
updated their ppearanes and are now catering
to a more sophisticated clientele. |

Old Leng is a casual Thai/Chinese restaurant
during early evening hours, but offers
live music for a low-key pub atmosphere
later in the night. A house band plays for a
lively mixed-age crowd on weekends while
there are folk musicians performing nightly.
The building is designed to look like an
early 1900’s vintage wooden house with all
kinds of memorabilia and collectibles, from
Chinese-style carved screen doors, hanging
paper lanterns, antique typewriters, |

a petrol fuel pump, old newspaper pages
hung in picture frames and classic advertisements.
This is an ideal place for a social
drink with friends without having to strain to
hear conversation and compete with booming
dance music.

Route 66 presents a more active experience
for those wanting a club night out. The interior
design is minimalist with smooth clean lines,
white walls and soft, luminous lighting. Massive
speakers deliver hypnotic beats, showing off
the digitized sound system. The music is mainly
commercial hip-hop, R&B, house, and has
bands performing live as special events. In one
of the main rooms the large projection screen
flashes animations and graphics, while the other
main room’s dishes out music videos. Overall the
d?cor is decidedly modern save for the few ornate
touches, such as faux crystal chandeliers,
Greco-Romanesque statues and columns, as
well as wall ornamentation in some of the smaller
rooms. Route 66 attracts a predominantly young,
beautiful Thai crowd; those wanting to see and
be seen. The spacious outdoor patio is ideal for
people-watching, waiting for friends to arrive or
chatting over a bottle. Entry is free, but showing
ID is mandatory.

JAZZ it is a smaller, more personal
venue than the megawatt clubs
on the RCA block. The space is
more like a big bar/lounge and it
features music more on the indy
tip, with the main focus being
house—deep, funky, Latin, and
tribal. Frequent special events dot
the calendar, making it a good
place to check out rotating DJs
and international guests playing
downbeat, drum &bass, electrofunk
style grooves and more.

This street is loaded with
good dining options and is
home to some of Bangkok’s
original trendsetting nightlife.
BED Supperclub is a striking
example of innovative
design. The unique restaurant/
club is housed in a tubular
structure, evocative of
a futuristic space ship pod.
The glowing minimalist interior
is pure white with smooth
lighting that can be tinted
various hues to change the
mood and create different
looks. As the name implies,
there are roomy beds and
oversized pillows for lounging

taking in the sounds brought by the scores of international
resident and guest DJs that provide a welcome deviation
from the hip-hop domination of Bangkok. Tunes range
from electro, hard house, funky breaks, salsa, merengue,
brasileiro, hip-hop to Latin beats. With a greater range of
music styles and perhaps in part due to the downtown location,
BED attracts more of a well-dressed expat and local
crowd, where celebrity and model sightings are the norm.
