Probably unlike any other puppet performance
you have seen, the puppeteers
in this theatre do not remain behind
screens during the performance,
they are actually ‘performers’; an
integral part of the show. The theatre
gives traditional performances based
on the epic Ramayana (or Ramakien
in Thai) which is full of intriguing and
sophisticated plots and sub-plots that
are divided into several episodes.
Some people may think this show
sounds terribly highbrow and boring,
we assure you, however, that this is far
from the truth. The choreography and
co-ordination of the puppeteers as
they move around the stage, is esmerizing.
Each puppet is controlled by
three puppeteers, who work together |
|
| |
|
in perfect harmony to produce the
incredibly life-like human movements
of each puppet.
The puppeteers—fully visible throughout
the performance—are classically
trained dancers who imitate the movements
of the puppets to literally bring
them to life, capturing gestures and
nuances. During the performance, the
puppets are brought out into the audience
area - Hanuman the white monkey
king mischievously moves among
the audience, while the female puppet |
|
|
 |
cleverly charms the men.
The show lasts one hour, from 7:30-8:30, just long
enough for the audience to appreciate the subtlety
and skill of the performance. The foyer contains an
area that documents the history of the theatre and a
display of how traditional masks are made.
Located in Suan Lum Night Bazaar, off Wireless Road,
you can combine a visit to the theatre with a shopping
trip.
The Night Bazaar is a much smaller (and
cooler) version of the famous Chatuchak Weekend
Market, selling smart souvenirs, clothes, lighting,
candles and lifestyle items - at incredibly good prices
every night of the week. |

Chalermkrung Royal Theater or
Sala Chalermkrung has a rich
history as it was Thailand’s first
air-conditioned cinema. Today,
it specializes in traditional Thai
dances especially the ‘Khon’ performances.
The ‘Khon’ performances in Chalermkrung
Royal Theater normally
last about two hours. These dance
performances basically follow one
of the storylines of the Ramakien,
primarily focusing on different aspects
of the myths and legends in
the great Hindu epic, Ramayana. |
|
 |
| |
 |
On top of this, Khon is Thailand’s classical masked dance
that is regarded as one of the most refined of performing
arts. It was originally limited to the royal court. Performances
are extremely expensive to produce, requiring
lavish costumes, elaborate masks, headgears and stage
accessories that require highly skilled craftsmen to create.
Additionally, dancers are usually trained for several years
to master all the intricate movements of all the characters,
which are vital to intricately tell the story.
Khon at Sala Chalermkrung is performed every Friday and
Saturday at 8.30 pm.

reggae, jazz and blues.
A vibrant and boisterous
district, Khaosan is the name
of a short road that connects
many other small streets in
an otherwise quiet part of
town called Banglamphu. It
is known by many as a decompression
zone and ‘base
camp’ for backpackers and
travelers from all over the
world as they journey on to
explore the rest of Thailand
and SE Asia. Here, they can
enjoy a wide range of accommodation,
cheap eats,
eclectic shopping, and a
multitude of bars, pubs and
clubs concentrated in an easily walkable locale.
This neighborhood is replete with guesthouses
that often have street-level restaurants or bars
that make socializing with fellow travelers a common
activity for anyone who stops in. Despite
being a touristy district, many Thai locals also
frequent the area to indulge in the nightlife, with
offerings by DJs spinning dancehall, hip-hop,
drum & bass and house while live musicians can
be found performing rock, pop, indy, ska, reggae,
jazz and blues.

people-watching. Another lively spot
is Wild Orchid Villa, an open-plan
restaurant adorned with colorful hanging
lamps, a random assortment of
artwork on the walls and wood-carved
statues scattered throughout. The
menu contains Thai and Western food,
while the customers are mostly foreign
tourists. On the other end of things, a
totally different vibe can be felt at Raan
Kin Duum.
The inside is dark, smoky and popular
among older university students eating,
drinking and singing along to the
live Thai cover bands.

Within this network of alleyways one can
find a place to suit every mood, budget,
taste and state of presentability—from the
quiet tranquility of tucked-away Hippie de
Bar, to the (comparatively) upscale atmosphere
of Silk Bar or the crude charms of
a makeshift cocktail shack complete with
plastic stools and ghetto blaster.
Eating while drinking and gathering
around a table with friends is characteristically
Thai and many restaurant bars
offer that choice. Dong Dae Moon serves
up Korean cuisine and has a bar upstairs
with a pool table and DJ as well as outdoor
seating perfect for conversation and |
|
Tom Yum Kung is a mellow
place to hear soft music and
dine on scrumptious Thai
food while sitting in an outdoor
courtyard away from
traffic and the bustling activity
of Khao San Road.
For non-alcoholic drinks
and al fresco evening gettogethers,
both True Caf?
and Starbucks have lovel
garden patios along with cozy indoor sofas and
plush chairs to lounge on.
The more popular venues for dance music lovers
include Immortal, Lava Bar and The Club, with
local DJs bringing in the crowds most nights. For
those who don’t prefer the thundering sounds
of electronic beats, there are quite a few bars
and pubs with live music. Brick Bar and Shamrock
are especially notable for their slick bands
and popularity among both locals and visitors,
and the Moroccan themed Gazebo is a good |

late-night spot for shisha on the
outdoor rooftop, listening to live
reggae or indoors for anyone still
wanting a pulsating club environment.
