On the fringe of Chinatown, Phahurat Indian
Market is the place to come to buy fabrics and
enjoy Indian cuisine. The selection of materials
is among the best in Bangkok, particularly for
Indian cottons and silk. Most of the merchants
are Indian Sikhs who are involved in the textile
trade. Not only is it a cloth centre, but Phahurat is
also a spice centre. As you go round the market,
you’ll be aware of that spicy, Indian scent made
up of incense, and of course Indian curries also
availahle here. Search the tiny side streets for
spices and other Indian specialties, household
goods and shoulder bags in Thai silk, all at very
attractive prices.

Soi Sampheng (also known as Soi
Wanit 1) is the most famous strip in
Chinatown, and it is interesting for its
present day appearance as well as
its history. While today it is a retail and
wholesale area for mostly cheapish
merchandise, it used to be a classic
red light district of Bangkok, lined with
brothels and seedy establishments.
Aside from kitchen and dining utensils
of the lowest prices, goods found
along Soi Sampheng are stationery,
cheap toys, inexpensive clothes,
textiles, fabrics, and almost anything
in haberdashery, as well as Chinese
religious items, much of these made
of plastic and foils - in the prevailing
Chinese colors of gold and red.

Bangkok’s famous backpackers’ district,

hemp clothing.

Many shops are open all day, but more usually

The Platinum Mall in the Pratunam
area sells mostly women’s clothing at
amazingly low prices. The shops operate
as wholesalers, the more you buy
the cheaper it gets. The sellers usually
get their merchandise directly from the
factories before they’re exported, So if
you’re lucky, you may find a pair of brand
name jeans that normally cost over $200
elsewhere in the world for a lot less.
